Recording is a time-intensive experience, and troubles that arise often seem magnified.
No one wants to wait for one hour while the guitar player runs to Guitar Center for brand new strings. So, to keep everything going smoothly and efficiently, here are some things to accomplish in preparation:
1. Practice! You'd be surprised how many bands come into the studio obviously unprepared. If you cannot play through the song without making mistakes, then you are not prepared to record yet.
2. Make sure your tunes are finished. Going into the studio hoping to finish lyrics or parts on the spot can be a recipe for dissatisfaction. If you want inspiration, surf the web for rock music lyrics.
3. Record yourselves. It is pretty useful to record your practice using a simple tape recorder. The finished product will not sound very good, but you'll be able to hear if you're off time, or off key.
4. Get your gear in shape. Do not show up for a session that you're paying for with gear that does not work, cables that cut out, battery packs that are going dead, or blown speakers. If you're afraid that your equipment is less than perfect, make some calls.
5. Tune your instrument. Drummers really should put on new heads about a week before the session. The snare head needs to be replaced immediately before the session, and if you are doing a lot more than one or two songs, consider bringing additional snare heads.
Nothing sounds as good on tape as a fresh snare head. Guitarists really should put a new set of strings on a few days prior to the session. Bring extra strings, as you probably might break one or two.
Bass players can change their strings, although new bass strings might be a bit overly metallic. I knew a rock music band that changed bass strings a week or two before the session.
6. Let individuals know you're busy! You do not want to be called into work half-way through your session. Every person involved needs to clear their schedules.
7. Have a plan. It is always better to have fewer songs to finish, and to know precisely which songs you're trying to get done.
9. Create a vision. I like to come see a band before I record them, just simply to get a feel for their sound, and create my vision for the session. If you envision your record sounding like the newest MTV hit, you may be frustrated and disappointed.
The Pixies didn't sound like anything that came before them, nor does Modest Mouse, or the Beatles, for that matter. When you don't know who these groups are, familiarize yourself with these by listening to rock online music.
8. Relax! Recording is fun, and there is truly no pressure. Just be prepared, and you'll have a smooth, enjoyable session with a wonderful product at the end!
